Wolverhampton Circle of Magicians

Steve Evans

A “back of a fag packet” description of Steve would read, “Professional Comedy-magician who entertains adults and children alike, can also juggle and balloon model. He has a unique performing style two children and a wife called Septina”.

Put simply Steve is someone who entertains people. How he does it is not so simple to put into words, but he likes to describe himself as “a Magic Bloke who also does balloons".

Steve has recently finished a BSc (Hons) in Building Surveying which links into his daytime profession as an 'Area Building Surveyor' for Wolverhampton City Council - for who he has worked since 1979.

His life as a performer started in 1989 by taking unpaid "open spots" in comedy clubs, working then wholly as a Comic, although his favourite acts were the magicians (John Lenahan, Ian Keeble and Keith Field). He learned his craft as a comedy performer doing 60 plus free gigs over a two year period. During this time, he was lucky enough to play most of the major comedy venues including The Comedy Club and Edinburgh Festival.

He decided that he wanted to perform magic as part of his act and went to see 'a bloke in the housing department' called Eric Moorfield. His first visit to the WCM came a week later, when he went to the Pie Factory to witness the 1991 Tom Laws Close-up competition, won by Dave Jones. The magic bug bit and over the coming months more and more magic found its way into his stand-up act as he prepared for an audition for the WCM which he passed in 1992. During his time has a member, he has served on council, been president, won the William Stevens Shield, won the Close-up competition (3 times) and was winner of the Presidents Trophy.

Steve is also a member of the BMS, where he has won the stage competition on three occasions and been awarded the Blue ribbon. Hi is also a member of the IBM and lectures when asked and was invited to do so for the Malta IBM.
